Woody’s Words – Week 37 – Accessible?…or Not?

Woody's Words

Accessible

Woody the Safety Bloke shows you why some hotel rooms are not accessible!!

Good day everyone, Woody again, I do a lot of traveling for work, I visit a lot of different workplaces all over Australia, stay on sites mine sites and construction sites, speed jobs other jobs, I’m staying at hotel, now we use a travel company to make all our bookings and they’re pretty good, I’ve got to give them some credit, they make sure that wherever I’m staying, the hotel has accessible facilities so they ring up and say look, can I book a room for someone in a wheelchair and the problem with that is hotel owners are not always aware of the requirements for someone in a wheelchair and here’s a perfect example.

Yesterday, I drove about three and a half hours from the site I was working at, back to the airport then I spent about an hour and a half on the plane flying from Brisbane to Sydney then I drove about 45 to 50 minutes from Sydney Airport to where I was staying so I got here last night about 6:30, had a big day, I was pretty [Unclear-01:29]  checked into the hotel and came up to the room and I just want to show you something, come this way.

Okay, now I don’t know how much you can see but this is not a wheelchair accessible bathroom, for start the camera is on top of the [Unclear-01:51] I can’t get to the toilet to actually transfer on and off the toilet, the basin, well that’s fine, basin’s all right, but look at this, I can’t get the door open, hanging around between the basin and the door of the shower and there’s no shower seat for me to sit on, I can’t stand up and have a shower, I’ll even have to sit on the floor and just put some towels on the floor or ring them up and see if they’ve got a plastic chair that I can use, so yeah this is one of those little dramas that I have that I wouldn’t have if I didn’t have to get around in this little machine, so have a think about it, don’t hurt yourself people, stay safe Australia.
