WHAT SAFETY LEADERS DO DIFFERENTLY

By Michael Weston

Anyone can manage safety; however, not everyone can lead it.

The difference isn’t found in policies, procedures or dashboards, it’s found in behaviour.

Safety leaders don’t just talk about rules, they model them. They wear the PPE, they follow the processes, they are really seen through action that safety isn’t negotiable.

They also do something many overlook: they listen!

They ask their team what really happens on the job, not what the procedure says should happen. They’re curious about near misses, workarounds and pressures. They understand that risk lives in the gap between “work as imagined” and “work as done.”

Safety leaders focus on systems, not blame. When something goes wrong, they ask:

  • What made this make sense at the time?
  • What pressures were present?
  • What barriers failed?

They build psychological safety so people feel comfortable speaking up, especially when it’s uncomfortable.

Perhaps most importantly, they are consistent. Not just after an incident. Not just during audits. Every Day!

Safety Culture isn’t shaped by what leaders say in a town hall meeting, it’s shaped by what they tolerate, prioritise and reinforce.

Safety leadership isn’t about controlling risk, it’s about influencing behaviour, building trust, and creating an environment where the safest choice is the easiest choice.

What have you seen great safety leaders do differently?
