Safety Never Takes a Holiday: A Seasonal Reminder to Protect What Matters Most

Another holiday season is upon us, bringing a whirlwind of joy, festivities, and the much-anticipated time spent with loved ones. However, amidst the celebration, it’s crucial to keep safety at the forefront of our minds, especially in the workplace. Our CNB Safe speakers, Dr Lana Cormie, Michael Weston, and Alan Newey, share valuable insights reinforcing the significance of staying vigilant during this time.

Dr. Lana Cormie – A Personal Plea for Safety

Christmas is a bustling period, with competing priorities that often lead to distractions and, unfortunately, increased workplace incidents. Dr. Lana Cormie, a CNB Safe Speaker, shares a heartfelt reminder that the end of the year should not be marked by tragedy. She reflects on the painful reality of the empty seat at her family’s Christmas table this year, the direct result of a workplace incident and urges us all to prioritise health and well-being. “The most important part of your job is to go home at the end of the day, healthy and well to your family,” she emphasises.

Dr Cormie would also like to acknowledge the grief of families who have lost loved ones and extend a heartfelt wish for a safe and happy festive season, even for those working during this time.

Michael Weston – “I Choose YOU For Christmas”

Drawing from his leadership experience, CNB Safe Speaker Michael Weston reflects on the unique challenges that arise in the workplace during the holiday season. He encourages us to put ourselves at the top of our Christmas wish list — not as a material gift but as a commitment to safety. “The best present you could provide for your family, friends, and work colleagues this year is YOU being SAFE & WELL for Christmas,” he advocates.

He highlights the tendency to become non-present due to the myriad concerns that occupy our minds during this season, emphasising the need to prioritise going home safe and well every day. Michael encourages us to make time for this important conversation with our loved ones to remind us to stay present and go home safely at the end of each day.

Alan Newey – Navigating the Risks of the Festive Season

CNB Safe Speaker Alan Newey sheds light on the statistical increase in workplace accidents during the Christmas and New Year period. He lists various distractions that can take our minds off safety, from buying presents to planning holiday festivities. Despite the festive cheer, Newey urges everyone to stay attentive, emphasising the importance of being aware of their surroundings at work and on the road.

So, as we enter this season of celebration, please take a moment to let these messages from our CNB Speakers, who are affected first-hand by the suffering and consequences of workplace incidents, sink in. May safety be the greatest gift we give ourselves, our families and our colleagues, ensuring everyone returns home to their families safe and sound.

CNB Safe wishes you a joyous and safe holiday season and looks forward to working with you again in 2024.
