NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2025

By Michael Weston

The 19th – 25th May marks this year’s National Volunteers Week. It is a time to both celebrate those who volunteer their time to help others and also raise awareness on how others can also volunteer in a space they are passionate about.

Volunteering, to me, is more than just giving time—it’s about giving heart. It’s a way to connect with others, to offer support without expecting anything in return and to be part of something larger than myself. Whether it’s helping at a local shelter, mentoring someone or simply picking up litter in a park, every small act has meaning.

Volunteering reminds me that even in a busy world, compassion still matters. It teaches humility, patience and perspective. I’ve met incredible people through volunteering—some who needed help and others who offered it alongside me—and each experience has shaped who I am.

Whilst I have been volunteering my time throughout my life in all different forms, it has been my passion for the past eight years to volunteer within the Mental Health Space.

It’s not always easy. Sometimes it’s messy, emotional or tiring but in those moments, I’m reminded why I started, to make a difference. Even if I can’t change the world, I can change someone’s day and that’s powerful.

Volunteering isn’t just something I do—it’s part of who I am.
