FINDING BALANCE BEYOND WORK

By Michelle Rath

After a recent holiday in New Zealand, I was reminded just how important it is to truly practice work–life balance.
Going on holiday is one thing—but how do we maintain that sense of balance amid the distractions of everyday life?

As I’ve recently semi-retired, I’m loving the chance to slow down, take my time and focus on what really matters—for me and my family.
I live on a 1.5-acre property on the edge of the Barossa, so as you can imagine, there’s always plenty to do and never quite enough time. I spend a lot of it growing my own vegetables and I get real satisfaction from knowing exactly where my food comes from—and best of all, that it’s organically grown.
Daily walks are also an important part of my routine. They help me maintain my fitness and give me a chance to breathe in that good old country air.

Although my sons and their families live a little too far away for regular visits, it gives me the perfect reason to travel when I can—and share the love along the way.
All of these pursuits allow me to be fully present when I visit workplaces and share Alex’s Story—about tragically losing my son and the journey our family has been on ever since.

Keeping Alex’s message alive, in honour of his life, is deeply important to me. I want workplaces to truly understand the lasting impacts of a workplace incident.
By continuing to find balance in my own life, I can keep sharing his story — and his message — for as long as possible.

If you’d like to have Michelle share “Alex’s Story” and her lived experience with your workplace or organisation, visit Michelle’s page to learn more.
